Lets Talk Politics

Here are four important words/attitudes to remember on this topic and any topic where there may be differing views.

    • Prayerful
    • Biblical
    • Humble
    • Loving

These are notes from the "Let's Talk About Politics" workshop I led at the 2026 Church Ministries Conference.

Was the most recent presidential election the biggest election ever?
    Yes and No

It is not surprising that non-Christians view the next election as the most important one ever.

They have no real, future, eternal hope.

Let's look at two passages of scripture, an Old Testament passage and a New Testament passage, to help us think about this topic.

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" is often thought of as an instant blessing.  In verses 4 through 11, we see the Israelites living in exile for 70 years, building homes, planting gardens, marrying, and having children.

For context, read Jeremiah 29:4 - 11 HERE.

God commanded Israel, while they were in Babylonian Exile, to

      • build houses and live in them
      • plant gardens and eat their produce
      • marry and have children
      • seek the welfare of the city where God sent them
      • pray to the Lord on the city's behalf

In verse 10, God says this captivity will be for 70 years.

The bottom line is to be completely where you are, as long as God has you there, for God's glory.

    Romans 13:1—7

Here are two sermon resources on this passage:

    Remember,

    God is holy and sovereign.

Man is sinful and dependent on God.

Government is a divine institution authorized by God.

The purpose of government is to ensure the common good.

Christians are to be good citizens.

The solution to political apathy is not political idolatry.

The solution to political idolatry is not political apathy.

Resources from How Can I Love Church Members with Different Politics by Leeman & Naselli

    1. Adjust expectations.
    2. Recognize what unites a church and what belongs to the domain of Christian freedom.
    3. Understand the difference between straight-line and jagged-line issues.
    4. Respect those who have a different conscience on jagged line issues.
    5. Remember what is most important.

Quotes from What Do I Say When…? by Walker & Walker

“Changing your world doesn’t happen by complaining but by slow plodding and persuasion.”

“Apathy and obsession are equally alike in being the wrong approach to political engagement.”

“Political engagement is a forum for loving one’s neighbor by seeking your neighbor’s flourishing. Christians should not engage in politics for the sake of their own interests of what causes all people to have the best chance to prosper.”

    • An order to stay silent in the face of evil

    Praying the Bible - Daniel

These are notes from the "Praying the Bible - the Book of Daniel" workshop I led at the 2026 Church Ministries Conference.

Daniel 6:25-27 is filled with truths about who God is and truths we need to pray.

Prayerfully read these three verses and consider how to pray the truths in them.

Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: “Peace be multiplied to you. I make a decree that in all my royal dominion, people are to tremble and fear before the God of Daniel,
for he is the living God,
    enduring forever;
His kingdom shall never be destroyed, and his dominion shall be to the end.
He delivers and rescues;  he works signs and wonders  in heaven and on earth,
He who has saved Daniel  from the power of the lions.”

Compare what this verse contains and what you often pray.

    Godward vs. Self-centered.

     Monday - Daniel 1 - OBEDIENCE

Daniel and his friends trusted the LORD.

God gives knowledge and wisdom (1:17).

God, help us obey you and your commands.

    Mark 12:28-31: The Greatest Commandments

Remember the heart of God's commands, all of His commands, is worship.

What do we need to obey God and His Commands?

Remember God's holiness, grace, power, word, and so many other provisions of God.

We need God to obey God.

    Tuesday - Daniel 2 - PRAYER

Daniel and his friends prayed (2:17, 18).

    God reveals his plan.

    God, grow our prayer life.

    Prayer Problem:

"The method of most Christians in prayer is to say the same old things about the same old things."  Don Whitney

    Prayer Helps:

    Wednesday -Daniel 3 - WORSHIP

Daniel’s friends didn’t worship the idol. They trusted God (3:16-18).

    God saves.

God, help us to see people and things that distract us from you.

    Proverbs 29:25

Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.

    Titus 2:12 - 13

[The grace of God] teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope - the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

Two-part sin in the heart of man

    1. Idolatry (Exodus 20:1 - 3; Romans 1:25). Seeking ultimate satisfaction in anything other than God.
    2. Violation of God's Moral Law.  Sinful behavior.

    Thursday - Daniel 4 - HUMILITY

Nebuchadnezzar was humiliated and then prayed (4:37)

God is the one who humbles and restores.

God, help us be humble and, if necessary, humiliate us.

    Psalm 115:1

Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.

    Friday - Daniel 5 - CONFIDENCE

Daniel spoke the truth to the king (5:22-23)

    God judges.

God, give us boldness to speak the truth, Your truth, all the time.

    2 Corinthians 3:4 -6

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God.  Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our suffiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the spirit.  For the letter kills, but the Spirit give life.

    Saturday - Daniel 6 - HOPE

    Daniel prayed (6:10).

    God saves.

God, help us hope in you no matter what the circumstances.

    Hebrews 10:23 - 25

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and the more as you see the Day drawing near.

What these verses are telling us to do cannot be done by meeting once a week for about a week and a half.

To wrap things up, here is a possible prayer.

    God,

help us obey you and your commands.

    grow our prayer life.

help us to see people and things that distract us from you.

help us be humble and, if necessary, humiliate us.

give us boldness to speak the truth, Your truth, all the time.

help us hope in you no matter what the circumstances.
